Nice Little Laptop
Pros
Small size, Sharp looks, Good Battery Life
Cons
Slow, cost
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Very nice little machine! Features far outweigh the negatives. I would recommend this PowerBook, especially for entertainment app's.
This is my first Apple product and I only switched because of two factors, iTunes and .Mac.
I have a Sony Vaio Desktop PC and a 15" Toshiba laptop PC connected via wireless to a cable modem. I needed the Mac for iTunes. Since I didn't need another 15" laptop (which is what two Apple Dealers recommended) I went for the 12" because it is more portable. I did listen to the sales guy and opted to max out the RAM and added the SuperDrive.
Positives:
I think the portability and good looks are fantastic. At 12" and titanium, it's a real head turner. The weight is very light for the full feature functionality of an included CD/DVD Burner. The display is nice (although not as sharp as my 15") and the SuperDrive is very well designed. I read that the Airport Card may not have much strength, but I haven't had any issues on my home network. When I got it home from the store, it found the network automatically and has had a strong signal ever since, even outside on my deck. I also read complaints about the heat that it produces. While I agree that it gets warm, it's not any worse than my 15" laptop.
Negatives:
The biggest negative that I found is the speed. It takes a while to boot up and surfing the internet is not very fast either. I'm used to fast surfing with both my laptop and desktop and this PowerBook just can't keep up. The speed that it uploads music and photos is good. The final two negatives are pretty minor, the keyboard is full sized which is amazing for a 12" form factor; however there is no backspace key. Use the delete key to delete and backspace. Maybe I'm missing something but it seems to go back 1 space sometimes and 2 spaces other times which makes it frustrating. The sound on this laptop isn't anything special, but not bad for a small laptop. There isn't a subwoofer so music sounds tinny. I also miss having a right mouse button although I'm not sure it's used much in Apple apps.
I think the positives far outweigh the negatives of this little laptop. Overall, I'm very pleased with this laptop. I was nervous about moving to a new platform, but it's been a good experience because the product is really a good one. I'm not a convert yet (probably never will be because PC's are too prevalent) but it's nice to have a Mac in my arsenal, and this thing is sharp looking.
