The Bottom Line:
There isn't any technical support, but there is 3rd party support. I recommend this computer as a first computer, and as a supplemental computers.
This is a very old computer. It was made for a few years. The design of this computer is impressive. There are many colors available for it. It has a built in headphone splitter. It also has built in microphone and speakers, and also a monitor. Almost everything needed for a computer to function is included all together.
With a USB port, you can connect a keyboard to it, and you can connect a mouse to the keyboard. And there is a power cable, and an ethernet cable, and that is all the cables that you usually need. It is very simple and easy type of computer.
Much of the world does not even have any computers. This is an excellent first computer. It costed over $1,000.00 USD when it was released. But now you can get one for $100.00 USD including shipping, and some of them might be available even less than that amount!! I am on a budget, and I multitask, and I use the imac g3 computers for many things since it is very useful.
You have to know a few things about the imac g3. The CD, or DVD, is a low quality one. I recommend using an external Fire Wire drive. A non-standard disk will get stuck inside the built in drive. The USB is 1.1, and that is very slow. The highest processor speed is 700mhz. Additionally, many online videos do not support the power archetechure ever. I don't know why they don't do that, but they don't. The highest RAM is 1gb, by using two 512mb DIMMs. There are only TWO USB ports. This is quite useless. One of the USB pots is occupied by the keyboard!! I recommend using the other USB port to connect to an AC adapter-powered USB Hub. Some hubs have lights and colors, which looks nice next to the colored, transparent, plastic imac case. The imac does not have fans. It is a CRT monitor, and dust can collect in it. Because it does not have fans, you shouldn't place the imac in a hot room. You might want to tape a laptop cooling pad on top of the imac. The imac is easy to take apart to access the battery, RAM chips, etc, and the hard drive and the optical drive. Do NOT go any further to take apart the monitor. That area is not user serviceable. While the processor can be up to 700mhz, most of them do not have that processor. Putting in a new processor is not user servicable.
The maximum supported OS is 10.4.11 and you an also put 9.2.2 and that other person recommended to put OS X on it. I recommend otherwise. OS 9 is a historic OS and it will not run directly on a g5, most g4s, and certainly not on Intel. Because this is a g3, you should put OS 9 on it. You can have two OSs on it. You can do many things on it because of third-party support. There is a-dock, iText, and Classilla. Classilla is useful for internet access.
Also, you can install AirPort on the imac g3, and also when needed, you can connect the imac g3 to phone line.
