Great Home Computer!

Pros Fast, reliable, fun!
Cons tiny bit fuzzy at highest resolution
Recommended it? Yes
We've had several computers in our home, and the iMac is by far and away my favorite! The all in one design is convenient and easy to use. I love the fact that is doesn't take much space in our family room. Although the monitor is just 13+ inches it works great at 800x600 pixel resolution and can even be used ok at 1024x768.

The USB ports are very easy to use. We have a scanner and a color printer. After plugging and unplugging a few times we bought an external USB hub (about $40) and now things just work. The USB is surprisingly fast at moving data. The USB scanner works just as quickly as the SCSI scanners we've used in the past.

The fan is a little noisy (but the latest new iMacs solved that problem with their new fanless design). That's about the only thing I'd like to change.

The user interface (Mac OS 8.6) is wonderful! We bought extra RAM (for a total of 96 megabytes) and every program we've run just works. The processor is a 266 mhz G3 chip (about like a 333 mhz Pentium in the PC world) and has a fast built-in graphics chip. (The first generation iMacs were 233 mhz with a slower graphics chip.) The newest iMacs are even faster, up to 400 mhz.

It was extremely easy to hook up to the Internet using the built-in 56K modem. It was faster at downloading files than our desktop G3 with an external 56K modem (about 51k vs 48k). Now we have a DSL line with an Ethernet hub and life is wonderful. The iMac (like all newer Macs) is extremely easy to network. For Appletalk (Mac to Mac and Mac to printer), you just plug them in. For the Internet connection it takes a couple of minutes to enter the IP information from the Internet Service Provider.

One downside of the iMac is that there is no floppy disk. For backups, we copy files to the older computer in the house using the Ethernet. (To back that one up, we copy files to the iMac! :-) To go back and forth to work, we just use email with attachments. That is about as fast as copying to floppies anyway, and a lot simpler.

My children and I have to fight over who's turn it is to "play" on the computer! I only wish we could have two of them!
