An excellent computer

Pros Excellent value, design second to none.
Cons Poor speaker performance.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  a nice upgrade for users of older Mac's.
I've been a Mac user for about 2 years now. I started with a lime green classic IMac (which I still use to this day). I had recently had occasion to use the Indigo model at length. I brought over some of my own programs for a head to head comparison. Here is what I found.

This IMac is a nice upgrade to any Performa or Imac Classic users. The unit is attractive and easy to set up. With this IMac, you generally won't get the nasty mess of wires flowing off the back of your desk. All cables (except the power cable) connect at the side of the machine. Apple provides a plastic plate to go over the ports to gather all of these cables into a bunch. This is a handy start to any "wire management" system.

The Indigo IMac outperformed my current IMac as expected. It did not exceed my expectations though. I tested Diablo 2, Deus Ex, and The Sims on this IMac. All of these games ran very well but The Sims started to stall a little with more than 4 characters in the household.

The monitor is generally the same as previous IMacs. It may be a bit small for some tastes but this is a family machine, not for professional graphic developers.

I am still disappointed in the performance of the speakers. There is ZERO bass response and gets distorted at higher volumes. I lined this IMac out to my friends stereo and got a FAR better sound. The line output on this IMac is quite good but, again, the speakers it ships with are poor quality.

After much cajoling and reassurance, my friend allowed me to open up the Indigo for inspection. The logicboard is still the same configuration. A tight configuration with little room for upgrade. For those unfamiliar with the IMac, the top RAM slot is easy to get out, once you lift the logic board out. (if you're uncomfortable with computer surgery, don't attempt this). The bottom slot is still EXTREMELY difficult to get at. (DON'T try to get at the bottom slot yourself, it will VOID your warranty). Not wishing to void my friend's warranty, I refrained from removing the processor daughter card to get at the bottom slot.

Apple has changed the clips securing the RAM and VRAM from plastic to metal. (HOORAY!!) Presumably there was a great deal of breakage for owners of previous models like me :(

Overall this is a great machine with excellent hardware and (from what I saw) software. I would recommend it to any user of a performa or older IMac. Beware if you do high resolution graphic work though, the monitor is a bit small for professional work.
