The Bottom Line:
Don't buy it. Save for something better. See review.
Well, my wife decided to buy this off QVC and I admit I was curious despite my reluctance (PC recorders just seem easier to operate and infinitely more useful). So far, I have to say it has been a bit of a bust. We have satellite along with TiVo and I just can't find an appropriate connection between my receiver, TV and this unit that allows for good quality burns. The user's manual doesn't even mention satellite connectivity, so I suppose there is inherent incompatibility. I have burned a few shows initially saved to TiVo, but I have to sit through the whole damned show again while recording to disc-one area in which PC recording is truly far superior-and I still end up with only reasonable video quality. Worse, the audio records much lower than actual volume (on playback you have to jack the TV volume way high just to get moderate sound). In addition, there is annoying lag between powering on via remote and actual response from the unit. Likewise for opening the DVD tray; I often find myself pushing the open/close button again too soon, thinking I had not aimed the remote correctly when in fact it was just crappy response from the unit. This results in the display reading "open" while the signal received was intended to close the tray and vice-versa. PITA! The unit also regularly freezes in the middle of burned DVD playback (not an issue, though, with normal studio-issue media). Oh, and the remote really sucks; it's way too small & cluttered with buttons that do God-knows-what and NONE OF THEM LIGHT UP!!! Very cheaply executed. All in all, there are a few tantalizing features here, such as menu creation and progressive scan at a very low price, but this recorder just has too many bugs for me to recommend it to anyone. Thankfully, it does play regular DVDs OK or it would be serving as a doorstop right now.
