B&W Sound Quality for KLH Pricing...

Pros *Sound Quality *Low Price *Construction *Built-in Mounting
Cons The S.5 cabinets are larger than most 4" two way speakers
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Speakers are useless unless they portray music as it was meant to be heard. The Point 5 system is an audiophile system at a Wally World price!
OVERVIEW

I guess I was one of the lucky few to get the Point 5 System from Amazon.com for $180. The system I bought did not include a subwoofer (I already have one), and I really thought the price was a mistake. The list price for this system w/o sub is $499. As of 1/1/05, many places are still listing this system for $299, which I still believe is a STEAL.

DETAILS

The Point 5 system consists of 5 speakers:
*(4) S.5 satellites, including a 4" woofer and 1" tweeter
*(1) C.5 center channel, w/ (2) 4" S.5 matching woofers and (1) 1" tweeter

*Frequency Response is given as 80Hz-20KHz +/- 3dB
*Recommended Amplifier Power; 20-100 watts
*Room Efficiency; 89dB
*Impedance; 8Ohms

*The speaker cabinets come finished in a high-gloss black, with silver injected molded baffles (or black baffles on some models)

*All S.5 speakers come with built-in wall mounting slots for use with the included wall-mounting brackets.

SOUND QUALITY

I read several reviews about these speakers before purchasing them. Several reputable magazines rated these speakers very well (see athenaspeakers.com for links to the reviews). It is very comforting to read positive reviews of a product before you purchase it, but when it comes to speakers, b/c people have differing opinions based on music tastes, etc.

I consider myself an audiophile and have picky tastes when it comes to speakers. I have Boston Acoustics Pro series speakers in my car, and still enjoy BA's VR speakers in another room in my house (but would not fit well in the room, so Athena Point 5 to the rescue). I've auditioned speakers from several hundred up to $100,000. Not that I could afford the $100k speakers, but given the chance, I had a listen at a local audio dealer. Sorry, back to the subject at hand...

Athena recommends a "break in" period for these speakers. They suggest b/t 50-100 hours. Taking this suggestion, I loaded up the Eagles "Hell Freezes Over" DTS CD and let it play every day (on repeat) when I went to work. This way, all 5 speakers would break in together. Athena recommends putting an audio CD on repeat, but unless your receiver has a virtual 5 channel mode, the front L&R S.5 satellites are the only ones that will get a workout.

So, after a week of breaking these speakers in, I decided to give them an critical listen. Needless to say, I was IMPRESSED! Using the same Eagles DTS CD, I listened to my favorite track "Hotel California". One of the best songs for testing the sound quality and range of speakers. You can easily discern the sound of the fingers across the guitar strings. Not to mention the vocals. Closing my eyes, I felt like I could reach out and touch Don Henley. Simply AMAZING! I would bore you with details of other tested songs, but just know these speakers are incredible. I was planning on getting B&W speakers (love their clarity and details), but after hearing Athena's Point 5 system, I am converted! I now wish I would've ordered a second set from Amazon at that amazing price!

CONCLUSION

I can't imagine anyone listening to the Point 5 system without being drawn into their immersive sound. Don't get me wrong, they are not intended for large rooms, but work fine in my rather smallish 11x15 room.

If you get the Point 5 system without a subwoofer, you will need one to get the full effect. I cannot comment on the Athena model subs, but I recommend getting either an 8" or 10" sub to match this system (if you need 12" or larger, then you probably need larger speakers than the Point 5 system). I am currently using a custom made 10" sub with 200 watt amp. The Point 5 system easily reaches the 80Hz spec, so I have my sub crossed over at 80Hz. The sound blends nicely from one to the other.

If you are in the market for a high quality, VERY reasonable priced speaker system for your Home Theater, look no further than the Athena Point 5 speaker system. Trust me, you will never regret your purchase of these speakers...a definite BEST BUY!!
