Good audio quality, poor design/workmanship

Pros Easy to read and use, good audio quality
Cons Poor dock and antenna connector design, poor warranty support by Audiovox
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Sirius is great, Audiovox is not. Buy a non-Audiovox receiver or an extended replacement warranty.
I received the Audiovox SIRPNP1 as a gift approximately six months ago. I also received a car kit (with FM modulator) and a home kit.

The sound quality and usability of the unit are good; since the unit is pretty large, the display is easy to read and the controls are easy to access. The unit has some nice features, including a "memo" feature that allows you to "bookmark" a song, and the unit then beeps whenever the song plays on any Sirius channel.

My main beefs with the unit are that 1) it's really too large to be mounted anywhere other than the dash, and 2) the design of the unit, with regard to the antenna connector, is extremely poor. I will concentrate on #2 primarily, as the size is something that you either like or you don't.

After I had the unit for a couple of months, one morning I inserted the receiver into the mobile dock and it reported that it could not detect the antenna. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that one of the eight or so "petals" that make up the ground connector on the back of the unit had folded in, causing a short. I was able to bend it back and the unit worked fine.

Over the ensuing weeks, this began happening more and more, with more and more of the petals. Eventually, the petals began to break off--now, the unit has only about 4 petals left. Keep in mind that I am very careful when I insert the unit into the docks--I don't regard any of my use of the product to be above and beyond normal use.

When I contacted Audiovox about the problem, they stated that I would have to send the unit back to their service center, in New York. After I pressured them as to whether the problem would be covered under warranty, the rep indicated that they would replace or repair the unit, but it would cost $80 plus shipping (keep in mind that you can buy a new unit for $99 or less!).

By the way, I have also had problems with the antenna jack on the back of the car dock coming apart--yet another poor design coupled with sub-par quality.

At this point, I am planning on replacing the Audiovox with another brand Sirius receiver, and I would recommend that anyone reading this review avoid the problem altogether and buy a non-Audiovox receiver (or purchase an extended warranty from the retailer so that, in the event this happens to you, you can get a new unit from the retailer instead of dealing with Audiovox).

Caveat emptor!
