A good buy!

Pros Picture, price
Cons Pauses
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Great unit. Beautiful picture considering price. My unit pauses so I won't keep it. Hope it was just mine. Nice player!
I just bought this item after having looked at the Apex and Mintek units also. I was trying to keep the price down. The Mintek at Best Buy had noticeable horizontal "pixel" lines, and the picture lacked color. It appeared somewhat washed out. The Apex at Circuit City looked really fuzzy and again appeared washed out and lacking any contrast. The salesman at CC said it was a good unit if you got one that worked (yikes!). The 1680 I got over the web. I was concerned as its hard to comapre units when no manufacturer wants to publish pixel count. lines of res., etc.
Wow, what a surprise! The picture is fabulous. Very slight pixelation, and minor ghosting. But you have to "study" the picture for these. If your simply watching, no problem. It is miles ahead of the Mintek and Apex units (the ones I saw anyway). There is some noise as the motor changes speed. The only problem I have is it pauses. I have tried many discs with the same result. All are very clean. The problem seems to go away after about an hour of use though. But, thats a showstopper for me and the unit is being returned. I'm unsure if the one I got was defective, but I recall some other folks having the same problem.
I didn't charge the battery so I can't help there. The sound was fine. I didn't use headphones as the audio was good in the room I used it in. And the unit comes with everything (except a case). AC/DC adapters, audio/video cables, battery, earphones.
If it didn't pause, I would keep it. I will spend the extra $$ and try the Toshiba SPD-2000.
