If You Have Multiple CD / DVD Burners (or lots of data)

Pros Easy to use, drive spanning includes DVD / CD Burners.
Cons no email notification reports, network does not use UNCs with hidden admin shares
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If you have (or would be willing to get multiple DVD burners) - it makes backup a dream.
My Epinions Philosophy
When I make a purchase, epinions is one of my most valuable resources for non-biased experiences and information. When I come here to research a product I read all of the reviews and the product specifications and details on other sites as well. You will find that my reviews try to focus on my personal experiences and research discoveries that I think are not easy to discover through pre-purchase research. This means that my review will not spend a lot of time on basic specifications, procedures or stock commentary that you can read in other places.

Backup Software Review (including other products of similar kind): http://data-backup-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

I actually have the version 4 product. I used the review mentioned above to look at basic features. I was considering Genie and then I did a more detailed review and demo downloads of both products. It was then that I realized Genie limits their "Drive Spanning" to hard drives. Drive Spanning allows you to specify multiple backup locations - when one fills, the system automatically moves to the next drive.

I have 4 DVD burners (for making disks for work) on one computer and NTI was able to successfully rollover 7 DVDs to backup many gigabytes of data. For this one specific feature you generally have to buy a much more expensive corporate product - in addition, many of the corporate products don't support optical media anyway.

It can also backup my other machines over the network. The network backup could have been implemented better - in it's current form you cannot drill down into the folders on a remote machine using UNCs (not mapping a drive letter) - and hidden shares. The limitation seems to stem from being forced to pick locations from a browser that does not display hidden shares. It would be nice to be able to manually path a location to a hidden share or use a browse dialog that exposes them.

I have found that only having to change media during backup one time, means I have a much greater motivation to actually complete the backup. If I have to visit the computer many, many times over the course of a day to complete a backup - it just won't happen. So if you are having trouble maintaining motivation - it might be worth it to pickup a couple extra DVD / CD burning drives and this software.

The product is pretty easy to use and let's me schedule jobs as well. You can also setup file and folder inclusions and exclusions - which can save a lot of time selecting files and folders in the UI.

Backups can be password protected and encrypted with up to 256 bit keys and you can set it to automatically overwrite media if there is pre-existing files on it. The list of supported drives can be updated without upgrading the software.
