I should hate the Bel 980 Radar Detector! (by a motorcycle cop)

Pros Sensitivity, Sensitivity, and more Sensitivity. Nothing else matters in the radar game.
Cons Pricey (not that I care!), and false alarms caused by other radar detectors.
Recommended it? Yes

I recently retired from a major metropolitan police department, having served in the Traffic Division as a motorcycle sergeant and traffic lieutenant. After 28 years in law enforcement, especially in the radar vs. radar detector end of the business, I?ve learned a few things about both... Read full review »

Pros A Top performer in detection; Clear Display; Clear Voice
Cons "Dim" too bright at night; Mounting can be a pain
Recommended it? Yes

Beltronics has produced a second rate performance, but first-rate value detector for many years. With the New 900 series second-rate detection is now near first rate.

Recently, Beltronics has been integrated into the Escort Company. A new product line-up could be in the works for the... Read full review »

Love My Bel 980

bykerton Oct 17, 2005

Pros Runs with the best of the pack, at a fraction of the cost.
Cons Still has false alarms, and has a learning curve. Rear detection is weak.
Recommended it? Yes

I've had the Bel 980 since 2002, and previously owned many models of cheaper detectors (below $150). After years of false alarms and poor warning from the cheap detectors, I can comparatively say that the Bel 980 is far, far superior.

The problem with the cheap units, which you can get at... Read full review »

Pros Loaded with features, excellent range
Cons Too many false alarms, complex operation
Recommended it? No

I purchased a Bel 980 in November of 2000 based on the favorable reports I had seen on the internet and in magazines. I drive approximately 180 miles round trip to work and back and spend a lot of time exceeding the posted speed limits so a quality radar detector is a necessity for me. When I first... Pros Upgradeable Technology, Super Sensitive, City-All Mode
Cons False Laser, SWS
Recommended it? Yes

When I decided I wanted to buy a radar detector, I figured I should do some research first. I ran some searches on the Internet to locate the best radar detectors. There is really a lot of helpful and useful information out there once you get past all of the Phaser crap. For those of you that don't... Read full review »

Pros display, reliability, styling
Cons none

In a recent 120 mile trip, I can upon eight state troopers scattered about. The Bel 980 was superb in alerting me as I came up on them. The features of this unit are great. It has 7 driver selectable/programmable features that allow you to set it the way you want. The buttons are easy to access,... Read full review »

I recently purchased a Bel 980, Escort 8500, and V1. The detectors where put through their paces and subjected to a few batteries of test that I feel are important to me.

The first test was K-band (HR-12) test. In this test I drove the test detector towards the radar gun at a specified... Read full review »

Pros digital voice is cool, easy navigation through menu options.
Cons Constant Ka false alarms, city all mode stinks, hard to attach to windshield.
Recommended it? No

Thought I did enough research on this detector to justify spending the money for it, but was way off on my expectations. I got it for $268 online and was pleased till I put it in my truck. The thing will false over anything, and not just the annoying one and done beeps, but the kind that actually... Read full review »

Pros Very sensitive
Cons Too very sensitive

Bought the BEL 980 based on reviews. Maybe the performance is exceptional, but it picks up EVERYTHING which radiates waves. From NYC to Montreal it falsed constantly - yes it did save my vehicular-licensed butt a couple of times, but it put my marriage license at risk. The wife is beyond expiration... Read full review »

Pros $230 at etronics.com. ->Rarely falses when X band is turned off.
Cons ->No external display for steering console like Passport 8500.
Recommended it? Yes

Well, like many others, I considered the Passport 8500 and V1. I felt this was a good value between the two. It has saved me on numerous occasions. I don't mean BS occasions, I mean seeing actual cops flying by me to get someone else. I start listening to the detector when it reaches about 3 in... Read full review »
