Cons
Poor display brightness; No band Elimination
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Not the best, but not the worst...Unit is worth the effort and price. Upgrades, you just have to wait for the next series.
Everyone has disputed on which class of detector an average driver can get away with. Kmart, Wal-Mart and Target offer models that are on the lower spectrum. As Circuit City, Best Buy, and Sears offers from lower, middle and higher end detectors. Internet provides the greatest verity for us users.
The Bel Express 936 is another radar box sold to us the consumer. This unit can picked up around $120-160.
Bel and Georgia Tech. provide that this unit?s sensitivity is better than most detectors on the market (excluding the Escort 8500 and Valentine). The 936 Express, is a replacement from the Bel 880 and has improved ranging and clearer voice than previous class of Bels.
Nothing is really new about this detector other than this unit is in the next century, sporting graphite grey. It uses the standard windshield mount that many complain about adjusting at first. Also the unit the traditional Male Voice that is provide by Voiced units of Beltronics.
The Bel 936s display uses a red-orange text, provided by Helart Packard. Three display levels, which the brightness portion is too dull for daytime, yet the DIM is just right. The info screen, when radar is detected, provides which band is detector (X, K, Ka) with a five segment meter followed by a 1-9 numeral meter. If selected, the voice prompt alerts after first beep or when segment reaches 2nd numeral.
The 936 also decodes SWS and Safety Radar. All 64 Safety Warning Signals (where available) and Cobra designed Safety Radar, which is displayed and Voice Prompted by the 936.
The Bel 936 is nondetectable. It has to be programmed to become Vg-2 nondetectable, with in turn detects for the Vg-2 itself to alert the driver. Though when detected Vg-2, the Bel stop alerting (if detecting) radar to the driver when the Bel shuts down to avoid detection. (Canadians do not purchase if banned. Spectra RDD will detect you.)
The City mode on the detector is a standard among most detectors, it displays the band and strength meter up to 4 then audible alerts the driver after 5-9. The Audio auto-mute, alerts first then goes to a clicking sound until the radar signal is no longer.
The ranging of the 936 Express does provide above par numbers. The unit has Very Good X and K band, while better than adequate Ka band compared to other detectors. (Except the Bel 970/980, Bel 890, Escort 8500 and Valentine)
X band- 0.6 mile city; 1 mile hwy
K band- 0.5 mile city; 1.2 mile hwy
Ka band- 0.35-.4 mile city; 0.6-1.0 mile hwy
Average conditions above; over hill reduces ranging
The Beltronics 936 Express is worth the price comparing to a Cobra 9850/9550, and over the Uniden 967/987. Not the best detector in the WORLD, but can provide a saving sum if invested correctly. If you drive like a cannonball driver get the 890 Bel, or a Sunday driver the lower Express series might be your value.
Stay safe
