The Bottom Line:
Wait for the new Passport 8500 X50 to be shipped
Since there is not much first-hand information available about new Beltronics Bel RX65 radar detector I decided to share my short experience with everyone.
We needed another radar detector for the second car. I've been using Passport 8500 for a year now (chose it over V1 after careful testing both units) and was more then happy with it - saved my b@tt on several occasions. Love the multiple threat display - works like a spectrum analyzer.
Not willing to wait until the new Passport 8500 X50 is ready to be shipped (May) I ordered Bel RX65 under the assumption that it will have the same performance characteristics ( it uses the Varactor tuned antenna - the same type the new Passport will be using) and is supposed to have greater range and better POP detection then anything on the market.
Few observations:
The unit is smaller (shorter) the Passport and has an upward sloping display. It makes it impossible to mount it above the internal rearview mirror as I used to due to absence of clear view of its display and because buttons on the top are unreachable.
The display DOES NOT SHOW MULTIPLE SIGNALS PER BAND in the multiple threat mode. It can only show one X, one K and one KA signal as opposed to Passport's four X signals, two K and two Ka signal sources. I guess they did it because of the space restrictions since Passport shows strength of the individual signals with vertical bars and Bel does it with numbers (less convenient to comprehend it at glance IMHO.)
http://www.radarjammertechnology.com/assets/images/products/escort/exp_anim.gif - this is how Passport does it
Sensitivity of the Bel is in fact better then both older 8500 and V1 version 1.8. ( I have the Valentine One on my windshield currently as a temporary solution).
Considering all the above I returned the Bel RX65 and pre-ordered the new Passport 85000.
