Good range... but WAY too many false alarms
Pros
Good range, lots of features, nice looking/sounding unit
Cons
FAR too many false alarms - this alone pretty much renders the unit useless

The Bottom Line:
If you're on a tight budget, go for a Vector 985 - older generation, but great detection and filtering. Otherwise, try the RX65, Escort 8500X50... stay away from the 995!
My previous radar detector was a Beltronics Vector 985. The 985 had become one of those 'industry standards', and most reviews will tell you that you cannot go wrong with that unit.
Well I decided to upgrade, and give the Vector 995 a try. After all, I figured a nicer looking, cleaner sounding 985 with more features (POP radar) must certainly be an outstanding detector. I was wrong. Something must have gone wrong over at Beltronics, because the 995 is quite inferior to the 985. They claim better range and sensitivity over the older models - well I'm not able to test these detectors professionally, I just test them on a day by day basis. But from what I have experienced, the range for K, Ka, and X seems about the same - but the filtering is TERRIBLE! On City and AutoScan, I drove long stretches of road with K-band alerts coming on every 30 seconds. For some reason, at every intersection, I could predict K-band would sound off. And X-band alerts, which I knew were falses with my old 985, would make the 995 go crazy, as if a cop were pointing the radar gun right in front of the detector. As another other reviewer said, "I have never heard a radar detector false so much."
Which is most definitely a shame, because there is little wrong with any other aspect of the 995. It comes with a nice soft case, the manual is quite nice, and the connector is just fine (some say the telephone-style connector may break off easily).
So, as I said, I'm no radar detector expert - I'm just wanting a solid, well-performing detector with minimal false alarms. I will return the Vector 995 for sure, and shell out a few more bucks for a Escort 8500 X50. If you already own a 985, but want POP radar detection (or if you just feel like upgrading), give the Bel RX65 a try, or an Escort 8500. Just stay away from the 995.
