German cars love German car audio.
Pros
Great sound clarity, nice security features, phat backlights, great EQ options..
Cons
So many options, it's hard to remember what buttons control what!
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
This deck provides superb sound quality while playing cds, or using the tuner! The buttons are easy to use while driving, and it's VERY stylish! The price is just right!
When I first began looking for car cd players, I didn't know what exactly it was that I wanted. My old cd player had been a lower-end AIWA. It was fine for use in a stock system, but for my new system (10 speakers, amp, and subs), I knew it just wouldn't cut it. I began looking around at the comparison spec. sheets in Crutchfield's catalog to see first off, what would fit in my car, and second, what were the best features to get for the price I wanted to pay (about $300).
The signal to noise ratio (the clarity of sound, a higher # is better), was a huge factor for me when deciding on a deck. I had seen many decks with ratios from 90-98db. However the Blaupunkt Hamburg's s/n ratio was a whopping 108db! (and it's definetly noticable compared to my old AIWA's 90)
I also wanted a deck with good security features. The Hamburg comes with what they call "Keycard" security. Basically they give you 2 credit-card sized pieces of plastic with little gold chips on them. The deck itself "trains" these cards in a unique way, and a card must be inserted in order for the unit to operate. Also, only 2 cards can be functional at one time. The deck will deactivate an existing card if a third is "trained". The cards are very convenient, since there's no need to lug around a whole faceplate, and they're the same size as a credit card, so they fit conveniently in one's wallet!
The deck also, in addition to your standard bass/treb/fader/bal controls, has a 3 band EQ. I can say that this is a HUGE help when you have subwoofers! On the other hand, you don't want to be driving down a busy street adjusting the frequencies being outputed to your lows mids and highs.. fortunately, there are some presets included that you can select based on the type of music you're listening to.
Installation is also a breeze....if you have a Volkswagen. :) Knowing that Blaupunkt was German, I figured things were bound to be somewhat similar, however, to my suprise, I pulled the factory deck out of my 1996 Jetta, and was able to plug in the Blaupunkt using the existing harness, and I didn't even need an antenna adapter! :)
The backlights on the deck would even match perfectly on a new Volkswagen (main display is blue, buttons are lit red- very cool!), unfortunately, Mine is of the older body style, and my backlights are green. (note: epinions is showing a Blaupunkt San Francisco deck, a mini-disc player, in their photo, the backlighting is different on the Hamburg)
Overall, the sound quality is superb while playing cds, as WELL as using the tuner (the deck uses Blaupunkt's award winning Digiceiver technology). The style, and ease of use, convienece of buttons, and security system, have won me over to this manufacturer!
*side note: Crutchfield currently sells this deck for $334, however I found an audio outlet on ebay, which was selling them brand new in a dutch auction for $269! If you like a lot of customer service help, go with someone like Crutchfield, if not though, definetly check out ebay for any car audio products!*
