So, you'd like something for nothing. You're in the right place! I'm a vintage audio collector. I love classic Marantz equipment. You know, the ones with the silver face and the Gyro-Touch Tuning. Well at my office, I had a mint condition Marantz 2238B Receiver from the late 70's that I wanted to sit on my credenza. This is a wonderful, warm sounding receiver that contributed to the Marantz legend. If you don't know what I'm talking about, go here: www.classic-audio.com. It will easily power very large speaker systems. But, I didn't want to destroy the office, so, when I saw an ad for some Bose 141s at $29.95@, I thought, that might be the answer! Bose speakers for next to nuthin'.....cool! : )
With the Marantz, the FM sound is so clear and detailed that I got a shiver up my spine just listening to it on my Boston Acoustics T830 Towers. Do you know the feeling? I wondered how would it sound on a pair of really inexpensive speakers like the 141s.
The Bose 141s are very small and were easily hidden in my office. Although they were assembled in Mexico, they are very well made. They have one 4.5" "Star Driver" in each cabinet, rather than the more conventional woofer and tweeter configuration. With a speaker this size, great bass response is out of the question. The front panels do not come off. The speakers are designed to lie on their sides. Not much more to say about them, but how they sound.
Eager to find out if how the 141s would sound, I hooked them up to the Marantz and pushed in the power button. I put the FM Turer on a "smooth jazz" station here in Los Angeles, 94.7, and slowly turned up the volume. Although the sound that came out lacked the total bottom end of the Bostons, it was full, clear, detailed and sounded incredibly sweet! WOW! I felt that old shiver. : )
In fact, these 141s with the old Marantz sound so good that I sneak into my office on the weekends just to listen to 'em. : ) My boss is happy and I am too!
