The Bottom Line:
Bose is a company that will support you for the rest of your life; sound isn't everything when you are investing this much in speakers!
There is not much more to say about 901s that others have not already offered. These speakers are top end, top notch speakers in every way. What you may not know is how well Bose stands behind their products. Our experience has proven that buying 901s is a life-long investment that are worth the current $1200 market price.
Our first 901s were series III, bought in 1978, about $700 back then. After 12 years of hard driving performance, I began to hear some flutter and found that the cones had torn away from the speaker drivers. Bose immediately revealed that they were familiar with the problem, that they were disappointed with how the speaker material was holding up in some conditions, and they had a replacement plan.
Now, remember, we'd used these speakers under heavy rock conditions for 12 years! They had been through two cross-country moves, stored in warehouses for months each time we were finding new homes, etc. Not ideal conditions. Anyway, for $400, Bose took back the speakers, and replaced them with brand new series VI models.
Now, after 10 more years of flawless performance, we have nothing but solid respect for these speakers. A total of $1100 invested for over 22 years of performance has been great, and I expect we'll have 22 more years to go.
The one tricky thing about owning these speakers is how the in-line equalizer is hooked up to your system; I suggest you keep the instructions handy because it is very easy to mis-interpret the logic of how they should be connected. Otherwise, everything is easy and logical.
What we have liked about owning these speakers is the range of uses. From holiday music, soft background sounds, all the way up to hard, loud, air pumping rock, they give us great service and top quality sound. I'm sure it's best to listen to many different models and styles of speakers before you invest over a thousand dollars, it will come down to personal preference. However, if all else is equal, Bose has been around and they stand behind their products.
