The Bottom Line:
Unsurpassed by systems at any price for reproducing lifelike acoustic music from stereo sources.
If you have the room and the power, there is not speaker system made that can compare with the 901 series for stereo reproduction of acoustic music. (If you listen to heavy metal or heavy rap, you'll probably want front-firing speakers.) Be warned: these speakers will make it obvious if the engineering of your source is substandard.
The multiple drivers, together with the active equalizer and bass porting provide huge sound and the direct/reflecting design provides an incredibly wide and accurate soundstage. The 8 rear speakers provide more surface area than a 12" woofer - and the porting, together with the active equalizer give the Boses more true bass than any system I've heard. You don't need a subwoofer.
And what most people fail to understand is just how important the front driver is to the high frequencies. It functions in exactly the same way as a BBE sound processor - by providing a direct route for the high frequencies to the listener's ear, while the rest of the frequencies are time-delayed by reflection. Once you hear them set up correctly - and with a properly engineered source, you will never go back to standard speakers.
For surround purposes I agree with another reviewer - they will overpower your other speakers unless you plan well. But no surround system can match the 901s with stereo sources.
