My wife and I recieved one of these wonderful contraptions from her father for our wedding present and we have enjoyed it ever since. The unit produces high quality sound which does actually sound much better than the average, run-of-the-mill radio off of the shelf. I will even give that it is better than most of the higher end radios out there, but...
After listening to Paul Harvey rave about these radios for years as well as hearing from all of my well-to-do friends who were fortunate enough to get one several years back I was expecting earth-shattering sound. I was thinking that the sound that would come out of this little box on my counter would be similar to the $2500 sound system I had in my car in college a few years back. I was wrong...
The sound that the Bose produces is indeed very good, but it is not what it is hyped up to be. I think that if I had purchased a unit ten years ago I really would have been amazed, but the obsolesence curve on technology is such that it is not state-of-the-art anymore.
We recently purchased a Sony surround sound system with a tuner, bass box and five sattelite speakers and in all fairness the sound that this system produces is much higher quality than the Bose. It can play louder, deeper bass and high tweaking treble with much less distortion if that is your goal. This system cost about a third of the Bose, making it much more bang for the buck...
That being said, I am still very happy with our Bose and it is put to good use as a counter radio in the kitchen. I do not believe that I would spend $1000(or even half that) for this system if it were my own money. Keep that in mind when weighing your options!
