The Bottom Line:
I would strongly suggest whomever is considering this product to ask yourself if you want to be Bose's QA department.
I purchased my Lifestyle 50 in late october '01 from a reputable chain electronics store. From the beginning, there were nothing but problems. I needed to change the CD/Tuner THREE times for defects. The powered subwoofer needed to be changed TWICE. In the end we (store rep and myself) determined that Bose's proprietary digital encoding software reads some CD's in error producing dirty, static filled sound. This means whenever I buy a CD, I won't know if it will play on my $4000.00 stereo until I play I take it home. Hence, the whole system its going back and I'm buying a Nakamichi SoundSpace 10 which includes a DVD as well as two powered subwoofers ($5000 vs Bose $4000). The store I bought it at was Tweeter who were helpful with enough pressure supplied by me, the disgusted consumer.
