Old Technology to Rip-Off New Users

byNaval Aug 19, 1999

Pros Small, integrated, good remote and good customer service
Cons Old design, non-upgradeable, bad sound quality, and overpriced
Recommended it? No

I'm not much of an audiophile, but I do wish that I'd done my homework before putting down $1800 for incredibly outdated technology backed by a large marketing budget. The Bose systems are visually appealing, compact, and integrated, and Bose customer service is top-notch. However, if you want... Read full review »

No Highs, No Lows, Must Be Bose -- The Lifestyle 12 Series II

Pros Easy to install and use, long-distance remote
Cons Extremely expensive, lacks many important features, mediocre sound quality
Recommended it? No

Bose is a tremendously successful consumer-electronics company. They have survived over the years by applying intense marketing pressure to sell moderate-quality products at extremely high prices. Just read some of the Epinions here on Bose products. One writer describes attending the so-called... Read full review »

Pros Ease of set up. Great sound. Visual appeal for the speakers.
Cons Price, proprietary technologoy which is non-expandable and maybe non-upgradeable.

For Christmas we bought ourselves a BOSE Lifestyle 12 series II system. From Atlanta, we went to the BOSE outlet store in North Georgia (Dahlonega). Our purpose was to buy a set of BOSE surround sound Acoustimass cube speakers and then to purchase a separate AV Receiver.

When we got to the... Read full review »

Pros Good customer service
Cons Horribly high priced for the sonic quality
Recommended it? No

Naval's review on this Bose product really applies to almost all their products.

Bose hit the scene back in the mid-70's as I recall. At the time, I was selling stereo in an audiophile store when their first product, the Bose 901 came out. It was said to be revolutionary because of the... Read full review »

Pros Compact, sleek design, easy setup, flawless audio quality, audio options.
Cons Expensive.

If you can afford the Bose Lifestyle 12 Series II, or if you can find a good deal (vanns.com, nextag.com), then this system is worth every penny. The quickest way to make your decision about whether or not make this purchase is to go to Best Buy or Circuit City and give yourself a Bose listening... Read full review »

Pros Small, easy to hide equipment sounds terrific
Cons Expensive.

First, let me say that I didn't buy the Bose system, my cousin did. I say that because since I didn't actually spend money, I never thought about the cost factor, though I certainly know how much it cost my cousin.
He bought the Lifestyle 12, but hadn't moved into his new house yet so asked if... Read full review »

It's Bose so there are not that many bad things I can say but...

Pros Sound quality, surround, bass is unsurpassed by any standard sub.
Cons NOT DYNAMIC. Have to use with a Bose receiver. Price.
Recommended it? No

First of all you cannot use the lifestyle 12 without the DVD module. This means that if the Bose DVD or CD player, depending on what series you purchased breaks, you are stuck with a $900 system you cannot use without buying a new module. This is a serious design flaw. I paid over 900 dollars for... Read full review »

I haven't been able to compare the audio quality of the Bose home theater systems to many others, but I think their biggest advantage is their simplicity. You don't have to be familiar with stereo system setups (i.e. many people do not know how to hook up their speakers to their receivers, let... Read full review »

Pros UHF Remote
Cons Overpriced, sounds bad, no expandability.

If you are looking at buying this bose system, don't. I worked in an electronics store for two years (just quit) and we had a saying for bose. In fact we had a couple: You know what bose stands for? Better Off with Something Else, another one was "No highs no lows, gotta be bose." I guess you can... Read full review »

There's a lot of hype about bose products

byjduarte Oct 19, 1999

Pros less clutter, stealthy, looks cool
Cons expensive, lackluster sound reproduction, not to good for plain audio listening
Recommended it? No

Bose products generally sound terrible, based on my experience. In case you haven't noticed, a lot of emphasis was placed by Bose on advertising and direct marketing of their products, which incidentally, is ironic since their slogan is or was "better sound through research". The 'Lifestyle' series... Read full review »
