Bose Lifestyle 5 stereo: my dog thinks it's a new family member!

Pros sleek design with crystal clear sound
Cons basic (one cd)
Recommended it? Yes
I bought a Bose Lifestyle 5 system 6 months ago and have for the past 180 days been thanking myself for the purchase (so has my once skeptical wife!). This is my first true performance stereo, having graduated from a boom box. I was lucky and found this for $700 on eBay, but would still feel lucky even if I had paid the $1400 retail price.

What's to like?

-- sleek, small style. I have a large mantle with built-in bookcases to either side and when friends came over shortly after I put the system in, I told them, "Hey, I got a new stereo, do you see it?" They looked around the room and did not see it. The tiny cube speakers and the unusual thin, flat console tricks the eye. The sub-woofer can go behind furniture, so that is permanently out of site.

-- unbelievable sound. The cube speakers are terribly deceptive. They are tiny but pump out dancehall-like sound. I have a dog and he never pays attention to the T.V. or radio, but when I put on Ave Maria through these Bose speakers, he actually pricked up his ears and tried to find the woman in the speaker! I couldn't believe it. My dog with excellent hearing thought there was another person in the room.

-- radio frequency remote. Without lying, I can walk two flights down and stand behind 3 closed doors along the way and still operate the system. As long as you stay in the house, you can operate the system with this unique remote. (I even take it into the bathroom with me and channel surf through radio stations. And, yes, with the door closed!)

-- tough design. You're not going to break anything on this unit. The CD player is the console. You lift the whole top to expose the lasers. No puny hinges to break, no glass to scratch.

-- myriad programmable radio stations. You can program 30 radio stations into the unit. I don't know about you, but do you even have 30 radio stations in your town that you like to listen to? The reception is excellent too, with no exposed antennae.

-- flexibility. You can add countless Bose speakers to this system with ease. And, the remote lets you program 2 zones, so you can specify which speakers belong in Zone 1 and in Zone 2. You want Zone 1 to be the living room and Zone 2 your bedroom? Great, you can have music playing in both or just in one of the two with only a quick depression of a button. You can also easily hook your TV up to the system to achieve killer surround sound.

You must be asking yourself, does this guy dislike anything about the Bose Lifestyle 5? Yes, actually. It can only play 1 CD. That is the default capability. But, you can easily hook up a multiple CD changer to and get that functionality.

This system appears to be a little spendy, but you get every penny's worth with the Bose Lifestyle 5
