Cut out the foul language

Pros Excellent Player, very good price, foul language block is great for families. Easy operation
Cons If you have an older TV, be prepared to buy modulator
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Would recommend it to everyone who is looking for a good player.
I was determined to buy a DVD Player for my husband for Christmas. At first I looked at the combination DVD/VCR players, but they were a little bit out of my pricerange. So I decided to get a DVD Player that also plays CDs and MP3s.

After some shopping around I found the Sanyo DWM 380 at Wal-Mart for $88.79.

As luck would have it, it was hooked up to a TV in the Store, so I could try it out right there. The remote boasts a total of 44 buttons, which at first was a little confusing. But the operation itself was easy and I especially liked the very slim design. All of our Stereo/TV equipment is black, so the Sanyo DVD player stands out a little bit with its brushed pewter color, but not too much.

On the box it says that the Player comes with everything you need to hook it up to your TV. That's only partially right. Our TV in the living room is older and does not have those three color coded jacks in the back (or the front) that are required to hook the player up.
The manual (which is very well written and illustrated) tells you NOT to hook the player up directly through your VCR because that leads to distorted picture quality.

So we went back to the store and bought an RF-Modulator for $24.99. It's a little black box that lets you connect DVD Players (and also some Videogames) to your TV. If possible I will write a separate review for the modulator because theres more to it and I think it's a great little invention. The modulator is available at Wal-Mart, we did not find it at K-Mart or another local department store.

Once we had the modulator, hook-up was very easy. From unpacking the Player to actually watching a movie took less than 10 minutes.
While the manual is very well written it is somewhat confusing. After hooking up the player it tells you to perform some initial set-up steps on your TV. We did not have to do that, but some people (with different TVs might).

My husband is much more remote control knowledgeable than I am, so he decided to play around with the buttons on the control. We did find that not only can you view a movie from different camera angles, you also can specify the screensize. I always find the movies that have black bands running at the top and bottom of the screen somewhat annoying, so I changed it to full screen size. Unfortunately some of the picture might get cut out in the process, but it was well worth it.

The DVD player also has a "last memo" finder. That means if you decide to stop watching a movie and decide to continue watching at a later time, it will automatically bring you back to where you last stopped your DVD. No mor rewinding and fast forwarding for me.
Now for the most important feature: The foul language block. In some movies (they are marked) you can totally block out foul language. We tried it with a Bruce Willis movie and while Mr. Willis still moved his lips, nothing came out. All the four-letter words were completely cut out. My children will hate me for this.

Other features include frame-by-frame advanced playback and selection of sub-title language.

We did try to play CDs on this player, works just like any other CD player, but it only holds one disc at a time, so we will use our Stereo for this.

I think this is a very good player for not too much money. We own several things made by Sanyo and have always found them to be very reliable. It is a little too early to talk about reliability of this player, we only had it for a few days, so please check back in a few months.
