Bushnell PowerView 10x50

Pros This binocular is cheap and widely available.
Cons The Porro prisms cut out a significant portion of the incoming light.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Their weaknesses are not as apparent in terrestrial viewing. I love the focus and miss it when I use other binoculars. Buy them, for the car or camp.
I bought these binoculars with a coupon my sister gave for a sporting equipment store. If I remember correctly the price was in the 50-60 Canadian dollar range. The 30$ coupon my sister gave me made this a very affordable investment for me.
I had not been getting my 100mm Newtonian out too often so I thought this pair of binoculars would help both my birding and astronomy hobbies.
For birding they were terrific. I would sit at the edge of a pond near my home and observe waterfowl and if a bird came in closer the rocking focus made it easy to switch to the new target.
I also used them for astronomy. They were a great improvement over my 35mm Tascos and 25mm Clements that I had bought for birding. I began to quickly tick of many of the Messier objects that had taken many frustrating hours to find with my telescope. I used a lawn chair, Terence Dickinson's guide and a flash light with red cellophane taped around its end.
Most of the nebula looked like smudges but it helped me get familiar with the local stars and later locate them with my telescope.
Under the night sky the wide field of view was great, but a significant part of the edge was blurred and slurred. Still, the remaining line of sight was enough to provide a good view of many star clusters, some fuzz ball globular clusters and some smudgy nebula.
I cannot believe I have had and used these binoculars so long. Only now I am noticing the pinched optics and a degrading collimation, so it's well beyond replacement time. Nonetheless they have provided me with some great moments in birding and astronomy. Tens years, they have worked for me. I'm a little embarrassed to say, when I was a poor student they were my main instrument and for some time after that.
During that time I looked through the lenses of other expensive binoculars and spotting scopes. I would ask out of curiosity, "How much did you pay for that?" Sometimes I would hear extraordinary figures. "I paid twenty bucks." and I might send them off to Bushnell for a collimation yet, just for old times sake.
