It seems like we always remember the good things - when someone is dead and gone we tend to think of the bright spots of their character rather than some of the flaws... Read full review »

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, They Were At My Wedding

Pros Memorable for many reasons

How did those characters get into my wedding. They didn't crash it. They were invited. More in a bit.

The year 1969 was an amazing year for me. I was in my late teens and a sports and movie fan. The NY METS won their first World Series. That was also the year JETS quarterback "Broadway"... Read full review »

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - Simply A Classic

Some movies survive the test of time, others don't. Sometimes choices made in regard to a film seem right for the time, and later on don't hold up as well.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was released in 1969. Then as now it's a fine picture. It has all the makings of what a classic... Read full review »

My Personal Experience with BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID.

Pros An essentially true story told with great imagination and humor.
Cons Some details in the movie, though often correct, strain credulity.

In the "Hole in the Wall Country" of Southern Montana and Northern Wyoming, they still talk of George "Butch" Cassidy and Lonny Longbaugh, aka "The Sundance Kid." For over 20 years, the pair robbed banks and trains. In fact, before they went East, and then took a ship for South America they are... Read full review »

It's parasitic: five days after you've heard it it'll still be rolling around inside your noggin, forever deciding which tune you'll hum as you take out the garbage or stroll down the sidewalk. "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" (performed by B.J. Thomas) would've made an excellent jingle, for it... Read full review »

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid: How Can Anyone Resist Redford AND Newman?

Pros Redford and Newman are great together. Super script. Great editing.
Cons That stupid song!

The Coen brother's movie Fargo begins with the statement that it is based on a true story, but it was not. This movie begins with the promise that "Most of what follows is true." It delivers on that statement. The sepia tone film clips that begin the movie showing old Hollywood scenes about the... Read full review »

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969): Unforgettable Hijinks in the Old West

Pros Pervasive irony mixed with humor.
Cons Reality is stretched almost to the breaking point in places.

I think one of the reasons that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was such a stunning, classic hit almost 40 years ago, back in 1969, was that it was a dance of sunlight for American audiences in the dark and gloomy days of the Vietnam War. It lifted spirits and made people believe that beyond the... Read full review »

Timeless Classic

Pros Great Story

A fun-loving serio-comedy recounting the final days of The Hole in the Wall Gang. This movie caught me a little off guard because I was expecting a hardcore western and got a light-hearted adventure tale. The jocularity of the movie serves a dual purpose. It not only sets the tone of the movie, but... Read full review »

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, my childhood playmates

Pros Characters. Action. Script.
Cons One montage a little tedious.

The sad fact of classics is that very few of them are perfect. "Morning Bell" on Radiohead's Kid A? They coulda done without it. An American in Paris' 20-minute closing sequence? Too long, and not very fun. But the reason that they're all classics is that they breathe vitality and novelty decades... Read full review »

My favorite Western, hands down, bar none is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Jeremiah Johnson being a very close second and Bite the Bullet, third).

The interesting thing about Butch and the Kid is- if you time the violence/bullets- it's literally under one minute. The fact that it... Read full review »

Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid (1969) Paul Newman Robert Redford Vhs

This 1969 Western encapsulates the genre, with dramatic chase scenes on horseback through breathtaking landscapes, daring robberies of banks and trains, true comradery between cowboys who would risk their lives for one another, and copious amounts of renegade charm. Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) is the smart, savvy leader of The Hole in the Wall Gang, and his sidekick the Sundance Kid (Robert Redford) ranks among the best shooters the West has known. This combination of brains and menace allows the duo to roam unchallenged, staging petty robberies when needed and otherwise kicking back at the local brothel. But when a six-pack of the best cowboys in nearby states gather to bring down the rebels, using a Native American tracker to follow them across rivers, over mountains, and through deserts; Butch and Sundance decide to flee. Gathering Sundance's girlfriend (Katherine Ross), they make their way to Bolivia via New York City. Unfortunately, old habits die hard, and before they know it, the charismatic criminals

Butch Cassidy & Sundance Kid [VHS]

This 1969 film has never lost its popularity or its unusual appeal as a star-driven Western that tinkers with the genre's conventions and comes up with something both terrifically entertaining and--typical of its period--a tad paranoid. Paul Newman plays the legendary outlaw Butch Cassidy as an eternal optimist and self-styled visionary, conjuring dreams of banks just ripe for the picking all over the world. Robert Redford is his more levelheaded partner, the sharpshooting Sundance Kid. The film, written by William Goldman (The Princess Bride) and directed by George Roy Hill (The Sting), basically begins as a freewheeling story about robbing trains but soon becomes a chase as a relentless posse--always seen at a great distance like some remote authority-- forces Butch and Sundance into the hills and, finally, Bolivia. Weakened a little by feel-good inclinations (a scene involving bicycle tricks and the song "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" is sort of Hollywood flower power), the movie maintains an interesting tautness, and the chemistry between Redford and Newman is rare. (A factoid: Newman first offered the Sundance part to Jack Lemmon.) --Tom Keogh
