Overpriced Boat Anchor: Stay Away!!!
Pros
On timer mode
Cons
Expensive, heavy, poor quality
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
Forget this one. It is a hyped piece of junk.
Got a Platinum version about 6 years ago. I had heard all the commercials and hype and had high expectations especially at the price. I did a lot of Medium Wave (AM band) DXing the 1970s with a variety of receivers, so I know something about what a quality receiver can do.
Within 1 year it started literally falling apart. One of the knobs for the tone control fell off, and was lost. A short time later the LCD display started malfunctioning intermittently.
Sensitivity was good, but not that much more than other portable radios as to justify the price. Selectively was better than cheap portable radios. But here is what I didn't like:
Heavy. What do they put lead in the bottom of the case to make it feel like you are getting more for your money? It doesn't need to be that heavy.
TV band: Huh? Why would anyone care to listen to the audio of TV shows? Only works in the city anyway, even if you did care. 100% USELESS.
I bet the internal AM antenna is nothing more than a ferrite loop, same as in all other portable radios. You'd think for the money the CC radio would have something better.
By now the on/off switch on top had failed, so the only way I could turn the thing on was to use the Timer on button on the front (to turn it on 90 or 60 or 30 minutes then it automatically shuts off).
Then the audio failed, at least the connection to the speaker, so i have to use headphones to listen to it.
The LCD display has also permanently failed.
I have owned many, many radios in my time, from cheap portables and boom boxes to expensive communications receivers.
I have never had one literally fall apart and fail like this piece of junk.
I would throw it away and probably should. I don't know why I keep it except maybe as a reminder to do more homework next time before shelling out that kind of money for something that should cost less then half.
