The Bottom Line:
If and only IF you must have a DVD player get this coby. Otherwise, save up your money and get a better one.
I bought this on an impulse, sort of. I had been looking for a DVD player for some time now. In my old system I used a 1991 sony CD player for audio and a PS2 for my DVD's. both of these had flaws. The sony would skip if you played music loud enough to make the floor vibrate. The PS2 had a hard time playing all of my DVD's, th epicture would turn colors on some of them.
to solve both of these problems I turned to the coby. I saw it at hastings for $50.00. it was the best coby they had there. the cheapest one they had was 20.00. I liked the coby over the other coby's because it had a blue LCD screen and a remote. I wanted to be able to read track info without turning the TV on.
So far I have had no mechanical problems. I did have to buy an RF modulator, 30.00 at radio shack. The playback is fine, although it does take awhile to read CD's and even longer fot MP3's. this is a minor hindrance though. It comes with 3 video outputs: componet, S-viedo, and composite. It also has 3 audio outputs: RCA L/R, 6.1 surrond output, and fiber optic. I ues the fiber optic and S-video and have no problems. Included with the player is a flimsy componet/RCA cable.
I find the sound to be good. haveing surrond for the first time is amazing. For a cheap DVD player i was impressed. The video is decent. With options like Angle shift, and Zoom, you can get more from your movies. The player is NTSC/PAL ready, so you should have no problems there. As for the progressive scan, I have know idea how good it is (My tv does not support it).
overall it is a decent player. it is very small and may work well in some places. if you need a DVD player and this one is in your budget then look it up. If you can spend a little more i would get a diffrent player. for only $20.00 you can get a much better player.
