The Bottom Line:
if you can find one, it's a great unit. much better value and better sound than the main competing high end table unit.
the cambridge soundworks 88 cd is no longer in production -it was made from around 2000 to 2003, then replaced by the 730 and 740. used models appear from time to time on auction sites or in classifieds. you should be able to find one for under $200.
contrary to most of the reviews here, my unit sounds tremendous and has performed flawlessly. the bass sound is particularly good, superior to other comparable table radios. the cd player and clock have been excellent, no defects. i have read the complaints about Cambridge Soundworks - not my experience, with this unit or with a pair of higher-end bookshelf speakers from them - i had a woofer die on the speakers, and they replaced it without a hitch, no problems since.
nice features - 2 alarm functions, a number of preset radio stations, comes with a small remote control, auxillary plugs for an external device like an ipod, an external antenna, and a front headphone jack. an internal battery means it won't lose time when unplugged or during a power outage. independent bass control in the back.
downsides - it is a big, solid, blocky unit that does not look as good as comparable high-end table players. the buttons are hard to figure out without a manual and some practice. it is not magnetically shielded, so don't put it near your tv. it does not play mp3 cd's (the replacement 740 unit does, but i can't comment on that unit, have not heard or used one).
