Great Sound, Maybe Lousy CD Mechanism

I bought the 88CD to use in my 'office.' It serves as computer speakers, radio, TV and Satellite radio sound.
The sound from this little unit is terrific! If my receiver goes out I'll have no problem moving the CD88 to the living room for a while.
I've read the other reviews and agree that there may be a general CD player problem. Since the CD88 is hooked up to my PC I play cd's on the cd drive with sound through the CD88. CD player works but on the rare occaision I use there is an not-too-subtle noise at start and stop of CD. Sounds like a gear stripping. I thought maybe it was due to the cat sleeping on top of the unit.
