Pros
SLEEP function, BASS/Treble control, RDS
Cons
Audio.
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
If I am considering this radio, it would be for the audio quality. Sadly I wasnt satisfied. So I cant really recommend this radio
When my $10 clock radio stopped ticking, I decided to upgrade.
I was looking at Sangean WR-1 and Cambridge Soundworks 730. But WR-1 doesnt have a clock and also Single speaker(as opposed to stereo in 730). Sangean ($86 shipped) and Cambridge 730($136 shipped).
Some of the things really attracted me to Cambridge 730 (though $50 more) are bass/treble control and stereo and reviews wrote it is better than BOSE wave radio.
I ordered 730 and received it, and only after two days I am returning it. The sound is just unbearable. I mainly listen to NPR classical radio. AM talk show is good and even other musics somehow are ok. I thought this might be an inherent problem with FM broadcast. And I went to nearby BESTBUY. There was a boston acoustics clock radio($150). Single speaker model. I tuned to the same station and to my surprise It sounded so natural and rich, I wanted to keep listening to the radio. But at home I keep changing the stations(which i dont do normally,I am an one station man.). So it is apparent that the radio is not serving my purpose. Even my wife complains that the radio is annoying (its not just me)
Sadly It didnt serve my purpose. May be i would have been better off with Sangean WR-1 I guess, but I havent listened to it yet.
What I liked. First and foremost SLEEP function. I dont know if other clock radios have this function, but I think this is a must feature. With my old radio I used to wake up and turn off the radio in the middle of the night.
Bass/Treble control - lets u tune to your taste.
Radio Data Service (RDS)- I thought this is unnecessary, but looking at the radio and finding out what song(more often -especially for someone who grew up in a different culture)
To be fair, this is a refurbished product, But arent they refurbished to factory spec(meaning they should be alike the new one in terms of performance)
I am really disappointed with these hi-fi clock radios, I am even staying away from sangean wr-1(as BOston acoustics is expensive at 150 for a mono radio)
For now I have ordered Degen 1103 and stick to it(no hi-fi)
