Cambridge AUDIO D-500SE, a true bargain
Pros
Low price, transparency, naturality, detail
Cons
A bit light, could benefit from some extra damping
Recommended it?
Yes
From the moment I put the Cambridge Audio D-500SE CD player in my system, I noticed enhanced transparency, detail, and air.
In the Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique, with the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra under Maazel, I noticed the breaths of the tuba player in the fifth movement, something that I had previously only experienced with a system costing upwards of 40,000 dollars. In the Mahler 3 under Edo De Waart, each and every articulation of the trombonist was clear and natural.
This CD player, at its 500 dollar street price, or 230 dollar used price, truly kicks most other "Bargain Hi-Fi CD Players", particularly the Arcam CD-73T, which was far too laid back for my personal tastes.
If you're looking for a CD player with air, transparency, detail and speed, for a price of 800 or less, this, along with the Rotel 1073, definitely deserves an audition.
