An excellent speaker system for a very reasonable price
Pros
Speakers powerful and easy to position, convenient volume control
Cons
Subwoofer powers down automatically, no adhesive supplied for volume control
Recommended it?
Yes
I'll cut right to the chase: This speaker system is worth every penny. Granted, it might not have all the extra bells and whistles of more expensive models, but you'll definitely get your $100 worth with this system.
The speakers themselves are very compact and easy to position. What's more is that, if you don't have room for the rear speakers, they're completely optional. Just disconnect them and you have a traditional two-speaker system instead of four.
Also, since the speakers are so small, and likely positioned away from the computer itself, this system comes with a separate volume control that goes between the subwoofer and the CPU. This is a wonderful feature; it's extremely nice to have volume control at your fingertips. My previous system had volume control on the speaker itself, and I usually had to reach very far back to adjust the volume. With the Cambridge Soundworks system, all I had to do was attach the volume control to my monitor stand with a piece of velcro and it was always right at my fingertips. It would have been nice had some sort of mounting tape been included with the system in order to do that, though.
The subwoofer is a solid, powerful unit, and, since all the speaker wires plug into it, it keeps all the wires out of the way and against the wall. My only concern with the subwoofer is that it occasionally powers itself down after a certain period of inactivity. While I understand that the subwoofer does need power to function and that it's wasting power if left on when not being used, it does become a bit of a pain at times. When using ICQ, the new message sounds tend to not be long enough to wake up the subwoofer, so there can be times that I'll be using ICQ for a while and get no sound at all. It's minor, but it can be annoying sometimes.
All in all, though, this is an excellent system, and a good replacement for the bargain basement speakers that usually come with PCs nowadays. Honestly, this speaker system is so good that I decided not to get a stereo system; I just use my computer instead. If you're looking for a solid speaker system but don't want to spend a whole lot of money, give the Cambridge Soundworks FourPoint Surround System a try. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
