The Bottom Line:
An excellent value with great sound and easy to use
I purchased this radio on eBay direct from Cambridge Soundworks' outlet store for $129 for a refurbished unit.
This is more than a clock radio, it really is a table radio that rivals the Bose waveradio. The 730 does not include a CD player like the model 740. But the radio performance is excellent. I got very good FM reception and the power cord doubles as an FM antenna plus there is an "F" type antenna connector. A simple wire type FM antenna is included with an F connector. There is also a jack for the included loop type AM antenna. I have not tested the AM response since I don't listen to AM radio. Once of the very nice features is support for RDS which displays the radio station ID as well as any other data the station sends out such as artist name and song title. This info scrolls across the display.
The radio has a built-in subwoofer that fires down. The result is that the small unit produces a very big sound. The radio operates in stereo, mono, and a mode called wide which creates a somewhat wider soundstage, however the effect seems pretty subtle to me. I have read some reviews in other places where people complain about a "boomy" bass sound. However the bass and treble are controllable via a jog wheel to tailor the sound depending on what you listen to and the environment you use it in.
I found all of the controls to be very intuitive and easy to use. There is also a auxiliary input on the front and rear of the unit. These are miniplug connectors. I plugged my mp3 player into the front aux jack and the sound was excellent.
I plan to use the unit in my office mainly with the mp3 player connected.
It also includes a credit card sized remote control that duplicates all of the front panel controls.
For the amount of money I paid I think this is an excellent value. The model 740's included CD player plays regular CDs as well as CDs with mp3 files on it if you need CD capability. You can also just plug a portable CD player into the model 730's aux input jack.
