The Bottom Line:
Go with the 15x50IS - the field of view is too narrow on the 18x50IS and they are otherwise the same. Definitely buy IS binoculars!
If you intend to spend a chunk of money on a GOOD pair of binoculars and are looking at high end names like Zeis or Swarovski then you owe it to yourself to consider spending some of that money on the gyro stabilized canon 15x50IS model. I also have the canon GL1 with a 20x optical zoom IS and find that the 15x50IS is a better image stabilizer than the GL1 camera unit, so they have definitely put their best into the binoculars. Everyone I have shown mine to has ended up buying a pair except for the San Jose police department helicopter unit, which it turned out already owned the 15x50IS when I went for a ride with them.
The gyros are good at getting rid of the high frequency jitter in the picture but leave you with a slow moving image instead. The slow image is definitely better than having a picture that jitters all over the field of view, which a 15x lens will do easily.
I personally would much prefer the image stabilized optics from Canon to the world class non stabilized optics of Zeis for about the same price. It's the difference in carrying a tripod or using them handheld.
