The New Canon Powershot S500 Digital Elph Is this the definitive micro-cam?

byHoward_Creech Apr 4, 2004
142 Helpfuls 143 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Ultra-Compact Size, 5 megapixels, 3x Optical Zoom, Print/Share button, very fast operation
Cons Weak flash and Redeye problems, no scene modes
Recommended it? Yes

One of the high-tech revolution's most interesting areas has been the ultra compact digicam camera marketing niche. Canon's digital Elph models have consistently dominated that market sector with their classy synthesis of style and substance and the new Powershot S500 continues that tradition. The... Canon PowerShot S500 5-Megapixel Digital Camera - Why, Canon, Why?

The Canon PowerShot S500 is a 5-Megapixel digital advanced compact camera with metal body that features some manual control. I find some of its features and performance aspects useful and powerful whereas others are annoying and make me question why Canon went the route they did.

The S500... Read full review »

Pros Small, quick focusing. Ideal for little children. Great for candid moments.
Cons Watch out for bad LCD. Gets warm rather quickly.

So after exhaustive research and countless hours of trials at Circuit City, Best-buy and Penn Camera we decided the best way to capture those candid moments of our 3 yr old daughter was with the PowerShot S500. We decided to buy the camera from Best-buy for $499.00 and bought their extended 4yr... Read full review »

Having two small children it became apparent that I needed to indoctrinate myself to the digital world. I guess I was really tired of getting down to Eckerd buying those primitive disposable cameras. So I decided to help Mother Earth by going digital.First off, let me admit that from day one, I... Read full review »

About three months ago, I purchased this camera, which was New Old Stock. The S500 was introduced about two years ago.

The newer, smaller Canon models have larger LCD Displays, but make compromises in Lens Quality and Ease of Use (buttons are too small on newer models). So, because I... Read full review »

Canon S500...very, very nice camera!

Pros Excellent images, battery life (LCD off), small and compact, easy to use.
Cons Not as feature rich as competition, battery life (LCD on)

I recently had a Canon Powershot S410 prior to owning an S500, but the lens wasn't acting right after a while, so I returned it and went ahead and bought an S500 for only a little more, due to discounts and a sale going on. Canon makes great cameras, no doubt, and the S500 proves that.

The Camera

I have a Canon S400 and a friend of mine purchased the new S500. Now aside from the new print button and the gold rim around the lens, I didn't notice any difference in picture quality. The quality of a camera does not just depend on the number of pixels it has, but the size of... Read full review »

I received this camera as a gift December 2004. It is still working perfectly and I have taken many, many pictures. Its been dropped and tossed around, and nothing has failed. It takes a great picture in a variety of sizes.

AUTHOR BACKGROUND: I waited years for this camera to hit the market. My requirements: as compact as the analog ELPH / IXUS APS models, 5 Megapixels (that is what your average analog SLR gets), and below $500. OK, they got me to buy one ... The next challenge: Could it replace my old SLR, a Canon... Read full review »

I was reluctant to spend $650.00 (Canadian) on a digital camera. But after using my brother-in-law's S400 I had to have a digital camera and the S500 model is the one I purchased. All the features that are available on this camera came as a pleasant surprise. Took a little to know how to use this... Read full review »
