SD850 IS : I'm not so enamored with this model compared to the last one

Pros 4x optical zoom, 4GB movie file size, ISO1600, image stabilization, overall build, easy...
Cons Expensive compared to competition, many megapixels x small sensor = some picture quality...

Purchased from Best Buy during their rather ridiculous price drop down to $284.99 plus tax and free shipping (and getting 1% through ebates and Best Buy's Reward Zone program). It seemed like a great way to see if a compact camera could pull off 8 MegaPixels without too many problems. Overall, for... Read full review »

Pros Price, image stabilization, features and performance, 4x zoom, face recognition
Cons Soft corners and chromatic aberrations at wide angle, no wide angle, red eye

Once the Canon SD850 IS appeared on the market, I developed a desire to get it. I have always liked Canon Digital Elph cameras. I liked the 5-Megapixel SD450 and the 7.1-Megapixel SD550. I really liked the 6-Megapixel Canon SD600. Well, I did not like the Canon SD700 as much. I did like the SD800... Read full review »

Pros Great quality pictures, no shutter lag
Cons Haven't found any yet! This is truly a great camera!
Recommended it? Yes

After searching for the perfect point and shoot to replace a broken SONY Digital Camera, I found a great sale price on this model, and have been very pleased! I have 2 young boys who are always active, so the most important feature to me was no shutter lag. SD850 covers that! I usually tend to use... Read full review »

Pros Compact size. High quality photos and video.
Cons Expensive (but totally worth it)
Recommended it? Yes

I started with the Canon Elph film camera, and eventually moved to an earlier model digital Canon. I recently upgraded to this newer model Canon digital photo and video camera for the improved picture quality and trememdous video quality. I am a graphic designer, so need to have a camera the... Pros Easy to use, takes great video too.
Cons Kind of slick, easy to drop. USE the strap!
Recommended it? Yes

We really do have two of these, but my husband got in a bit of trouble for that!!!

Even so, this is a great camera. I don't know how I would feel paying full price for it, but if you find it on sale or Ebay for a lower price it is a great buy.

Two of my favorite things about... Read full review »

Pros Good picture quality
Cons No wide angle, no manual controls
Recommended it? Yes

I have previously owned S100, S320, S400, SD550, SD700, SD890 and G9 cameras. SD850 was definitely one of my favorites in this line of PowerShots. In this review, I would like to analyze what Canon has advertised and what you actually get

Canon add:

8.0 Megapixels

Pros Image stabilization, picture quality, ease of use
Cons screen is easily smudged
Recommended it? Yes

I got this camera for Christmas. It turned out to be excellent. Its quality of pictures is very good. It is easy to use and your fingers do not get into the shots. My 4 and 5 year old cousins are even able to take good pictures. The wheel in the side to switch modes does take some getting used to... Read full review »

Pros No delay, bright crisp pictures, big screen.
Cons Get a case, it can scratch easily
Recommended it? Yes

I had the SD700 IS and loved it, but ended up losing it or it was stolen..not sure. So I bought the SD850 IS since it had more mega-pixels and was the newest to replace it.

This is the best camera ever. I have had an Olympus and Sony Cybershot and they don't even compare to this.

Canon SD850

Pros Fast start-up, minimal shutter lag. Compact, solid feel.
Cons Exterior finish damages easily. No manual controls.
Recommended it? Yes

I wanted something more pocket-size than my bulky Canon G6. The smaller it is, the more likely you will take it with you and catch photo opportunities you would otherwise miss. So far I love it and would recommend it. The SD850 is surprisingly heavy and solid-feeling for its size.

Great camera with awkward buttons

byrayhosler May 17, 2008
7 Helpfuls 8 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Great photos at 8 megapixels, panorama shots, viewfinder
Cons Awkward on-off and controls
Recommended it? Yes

I moved up from a Pentax Optio S60 and while the SD850 has many more features, they are difficult to access in a long list of menus, and even the on-off button is a chore, located on the back next to the viewfinder.

The main reason for changing to this model is that it's one of the few... Read full review »
