The Bottom Line:
Excellent advanced amateur or pro camera. Fast focus, loud mirror slap.
The Canon EOS 3 is truly a camera for advanced amateurs and professionals. This system has the same features as the EOS 1V system with slightly lower specs on maximum shutter speed and film advance speed. The body is quite waterproof and feels like a pro camera in your hand. The metering system is quite advanced and when combined with a Canon EX series flash provides E-TTL metering that really does a great job exposing flash photographs. Overall I am thrilled with the focusing speed and the accuracy of the eye focusing mechanism. It's a huge step up from my EOS Elan IIe.
The pictures that I have taken with this camera have all been sharp and properly exposed. This is a true testament to the eye focusing. The 45 focus points are distributed throughout the center of the frame allowing the photographer to choose any central object as the focus (and metering) point! The different metering modes are easy to select and allow the photographer to determine the metering system for each and every shot. The viewfinder shows a majority of the picture being taken making framing quite easy. Remember however, that any camera won't take good pictures if paired with an inferior lens.
My one complaint is the loudness of the mirror slap when exposing photographs. Because of this I have kept my Elan IIe body for photographs in quiet settings (wedding ceremonies).
