Excellent camera
Pros
Excellent autofocus, E-TTL flash metering, great flexibility
Cons
Eye-controlled focus is useless
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Excellent camera for the serious amateur, but save yourself a buck and buy the EOS Elan 7 rather than the 7E.
I bought this camera when I was asked by a friend to act as the official photographer at his wedding. I had a Pentax MZ-10/ZX-10, and the autofocus on that camera was not up to the task (in low light would search around everywhere). In comparison the autofocus on the Elan 7E is absolutely awesome -- it focuses exactly on the item you highlight quickly and quietly (with USM lenses).
The advanced features and flexibility are excellent -- you can customize functions right down to rewind speed (quiet or fast), whether you rewind the film leader, etc. When coupled with a E-TTL flash (I bought the Canon 420EX) the flash metering is awesome, working with a pre-flash and then the real thing to get correct exposure.
The eye-control function is totally useless -- it is extremely inaccurate and hence I never turn it on, and rather use the buttons on the back to select the focus point. If I can't convince you here, play with it in the shop before you buy it. (I am "left-eyed", it is possible that it is customized for right eyes.) It is a nice idea and a good selling gimick, but I really wish I'd saved the extra $ and bought the cheaper one...
All in all this is an excellent camera for the serious amateur. I use it with a 420EX flash and a 25-135mm IS USM lens for weddings and it does the job perfectly.
