This is the Canon MP620 multi function printer copier. It was designed with Ink Lock.
This should be outlawed. You run out of ink (according to the printer) and the unit ceases all other functionality, prompting you to replace ink cartridge and not allowing you to do anything else without replacing that one cartridge.
I liked the good old days where you could do a faded print if all you needed was info on not a presentation quality print.
This is an intentional ploy by the manufacturer (Canon, although they are not alone in this tactic) to make you buy more ink than should be needed. Just start charging the money upfront instead of relying on tricks on the back end to make up for the loss of selling the printer at or below cost.
