The Bottom Line:
If your looking for a good camcorder on the cheap, check out this Canon ZR500.
While this camcorder is since considered "outdated" it still has tons more features then a lot of todays budget camcorders. The video quality is so-so and if you don't mind messing with DV tapes, you have a really good camcorder!
Mine has been excellent, ive dropped it many times and it keeps on going. It has never given me a problem. Of course now the video quality isn't so great compared to a HD camcorder. But worth it if you dont mind about having HD quality video. I paid $60 used online, and it was my first real camcorder besides my pocket camcorder I had before.
The audio is very good, and there is some tape motor noise when recording, but thats to be expected on all MINIDV camcorders. Battery life is not to impressive, peaking at 60 minutes of recording time for me. But im happy and would reccomend it.
It also has a viewfiner and LCD, most if not all camcorders under $300 dont have viewfinders. This viewfinder is good and also comes in handy when your in the sun and cant see the LCD, or when you want to save battery life. The viewfinder is off when the LCD is opened, but if you turn the LCD 360* (so you could see yourself if your filming yourself) the viewfinder turns on as well.
