Nice camera if only it wasn't so loud

The Bottom Line:
Great camera if you can handle the annoying, incessant, humming noise
Canon has become superior in many ways to Sony when it comes to camcorders. I put both high on the list. This particular model is digital, has a separate card for still shots which is nice, and is loaded with features. Most useful is the compact size.
But they blew it with the ZR-45.
The biggest con is perhaps the only con...but a huge, and I mean huge one. There is a constant annoying humming noise when you record and playback. This would bother maybe 50% of the population to the point of insanity in my opinion. The other 50% of the population would live with it and be happy. Type A vs. Type B personality I guess. Was mine defective? Maybe. But I could not live with it.
If this is normal for this camera, it does make me wonder how it ever passed quality control. Sounds to me like they couldn't make it any quieter and just hoped for the best, which is disappointing for a company like Canon.
No matter how difficult it is, or what the salesman says, bring your OWN tape to play in a demo version at a store, go to a quiet area, and try it. If you can live with the noise, great choice. If not, buy something else until they fix it.
