The Bottom Line:  Shop around and go DVD if possible. If not possible, get a higher end Mini DV.
I bought this camcorder after the RCA VHS-C camcorder I had had for 8 years needed a new battery. Instead of paying $40 for the new battery, I decided maybe it was a good time to shop for something new and updated. I was also in the market for a digital still camera. That is actually how the shopping started.

I ended up buying a separate digital still camera, which I recommend as the still pictures on camcorders are not that great yet. Anyway, after much shopping and comparing, I went with this model. I chose it for a few reasons, probably some of the same you are considering. The Canon name, the features, the price, the size, etc. I was not interested in making Hollywood movies or anything too technical. Just wanted something to be able to keep memories and such on. The first thing I noticed that I didn't much care for was the quality of filming at night or in the dark. Not good at all. The quality of filming indoors is also not very good. This camcorder is great for filming outside during the day.

I had had this camcorder for exactly one year when the LCD stopped showing image. I would turn it on and there would be no image, so I would check the viewfinder and same result. I would record and playback to find no image was recording. If I turned it off and on acouple of times it would fix itself. Then, after a while it wouldn't do that. So, I contacted Canon and of course the warranty expired at one year and it would cost me a bundle to repair. I would have to ship it to Canon and they would look at it. They would then send me a written estimate and if I agreed, they would repair it. If not, they would ship it back. The whole process would take a couple of months. No thanks. The repairs were going to cost almost half the price of the camcorder itself.

Needless to say I wasted over $400 on a camcorder to be able to use for exactly the warranty period before it turned to trash. I am and was pretty disappointed since I had had the RCA VHS-C for 8 years and it still works fine. I used that for a while as the back up until I could buy another camcorder.

This year for Christmas, I received a DVD Camcorder from a generous relative. I highly recommend going the extra cost to get the DVD camcorder. Remember, the lowest price is not always the best choice. Sometimes, you get what you pay for.
