Decent camcorder. Extra features not worth the price.

The Bottom Line:
I recommend buying the ZR60 instead, but buy an external light and a longer lasting battery with it.
I have used Canon digital camcorders before, and was happy with their performance, so I bought this one. It is a decent camcorder, if you use it strictly as a camcorder. Two of the reasons that I opted for ZR70 are the SD memory card slot for still photos and the built-in light on the front. I wish I had gone with the ZR60, which doesn't have these features. They are not worth the money.
Still photos are unusable with this camcorder. They are not even good enough for the web or email. And that is at 1024x768 with highest quality selected. If you want to shoot still photos, buy a camera.
The built-in light is only good for close shots, but even then it turns the subject blue. If you need light, buy the lower model camcorder and pay $50 extra for a light that attaches to the accessory shoe on top. By the way, the low light mode just keeps the shudder open longer for each frame, resulting in choppy video, but nice color in poor lighting.
I have seen several reviews complaining about motor noise being very loud in the recordings. There is a little hum, but it doesn't seem any worse than any other camcorder I've used. I don't find it very objectionable.
It did come with a wide angle lens, which is nice. And it comes with a longer lasting battery than the lower model. It's a good consumer camcorder. I just wish I hadn't gone for the extra features that are on the ZR70.
