Casio EV-600 / Excellent Build Quality / Accurate Tuning

Pros - Incredible Backlight - The BEST reception of any portable - Vault solid construction
Cons - High priced - Hard to find
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  The best portable television released by anyone. Picture, Reception, Build Quality, and Sound is superb. If you find it, grab it.
The Casio EV-600 is built in a unique manner. The tuner, screen, and overall feel of the unit surpasses that of comparable models previously and recently released by Casio. I've purchased (and sold) several models from RCA, Sony, and Casio. Currently, I own the Casio EV-680, EV-600, and a Sony Color Watchman. I've tried numerous other models including the Casio EV-670 and EV-4500.

This review will focus on the second Casio I've owned, the EV-600.

I appreciate high quality construction, solid feel, and good performance. It is apparent that manufacturing quality portable televisions, while keeping them competitively priced, is a difficult task even for respected companies.

The biggest problem that portables possess is reception. They just don't want to lock into stations. Casio's latest model, the EV-680, boasts a higher resolution than the EV-600 and earlier models, however, does not lock into stations as accurately as the EV-600, nor does it's screen possess the color saturation qualities of previous TFTs.

Out of all my portable TV's, I find that I use the EV-600 most often. I purchased the EV-680 thinking that it would effectively replace my old EV-600, and I was somewhat disappointed. I kept it, regardless, as a back-up unit.

Casio should really focus their efforts in making more models like the the EV-600. The flip cover serves a real purpose and is very practical. The color is AMAZING. The reception is better than any other portable LCD TV I've seen or owned, and the backlight illuminates the screen perfectly, with a uniform white balance.

Unlike my EV-680, where the backlight casts a ghostly hue, ultimately washing out the image and making the color look uneven.

I've put many miles on my EV-600. I never thought I would be so pleased with it over the past few years. Unfortunately, when this unit goes, I doubt I'll find anything equivalent to replace it. The EV-680 is a decent backup unit, but does not produce the incredible picture that the EV-600 does so frequently. If you can find one of these units in a store, grab it. It's hard to find, and there are few, if any stores that even acknowledge it existed.

I purchased mine at Fry's a few years ago. Though it was ridiculously priced at the time I bought it, if I knew then what I know now, I would have purchased a couple of them.

I highly recommend the Casio EV-600.
