Casio EV-660 - a winner!

byzx9r May 3, 2001
Pros Picture & sound quality, picture quality, did I mention picture quality
Cons Price, battery life
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If you are willing to spend a few extra bucks, the EV-660, the big screen(for a portable) 3" TFT active matrix just can't be beat by others!
I purchased my Casio EV-660(looks brand new just out of the box, not a scratch on it!) from a pawn shop for $75 . . . . talk about a killer deal! I'm still blown away by the picture quality compared to my Optimus 2.2" LCD portable TV. Yes, I know my Optimus does not utilize the TFT active matrix lcd technology but still, the EV-660 has an unbelievable picture for what it is, a highly portable tv and it blows away every other similar portable I've seen. People that post poor reviews such as the one about the EV-550 having bad reception, what do you expect . . . . digital cable reception??? The idea is to have a convenient way to catch shows or events on the go where decent broadcast signals exist, not out in the middle of nowhere. The reception capability of the EV-660 is better than my Optimus(model 16-178), which has good reception capability. Sound quality is also excellent with the EV-660 with what looks like a larger speaker than my Optimus. While in a vehicle(no, I'm not driving) at highway speed, the EV-660 has plenty of volume to be heard, where my Optimus would have to be turned up to the point of distortion. The color, clarity and sharpness of the picture on the EV-660 is EXCELLENT, allowing even the fine print in commercials to be legible. The screen is viewable in the brightest conditions, even direct sunlight, in which case the picture looses some of its color depth but can still be seen, which is more than I can say for my Optimus and other portables I've seen, they completely wash out. It must be the TFT active matrix technology that allows such an impressive picture in all but the harshest conditions, and I'm sure the trend will be for all the manufacturers to go to TFT active matrix. The Casio EV-660 is quite expensive compared to the competitors(unless you got the deal I did :-D), but if you are looking for a high quality portable lcd tv and are willing to shell out the bucks, you won't be disappointed!
