Casio takes a licking and keeps on....working fine
Pros
great reception, TREMENDOUS durability during my drop test from 6 feet onto concrete.
Cons
short battery life, tuning is a mild pain. digital would be better.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
I liked it at the time. I want a bigger screen now. I'd recommend it for those who need a small portable unit.
I bought one of these to use on my job as a TV news photographer. While doing live shots for the shows I wound up moving around a lot. I couldn't alway tell when I was "hot", or on-air. So, I taped this TV below the front end of the lens shade and faced it back toward me so I could shoot and view the monitor simultaneously. One day I was starting to tape it to the camera. The camera was mounted on a tripod and about six feet off the ground. Concrete sidewalk. Well, the tape gave way on the first piece before I could shore it up with another strip. The TV came crashing down on the sidewalk. I looked at the other cameraman and we made odds on whether it would ever work again. I flicked the power switch to on. PRESTO. It started right up with a good picture. What a relief. DO NOT try this at home!!
This is not the first Casio I've had smack the pavement before.
A few years ago while shooting in Camden, NJ on the bad streets, I had my reporter take over the driving so I could get a rolling shot. I owned one of the original PDA precursors, a Digital organizer. A little black beauty with a folding keyboard and screen, and a whopping 32K of memory. It did it's job well. Anyway, it was in my shirt pocket, as I leaned out the window of the van and hung over the side with the mini-cam just inches from the road rolling by. About 10 seconds into the shot my Casio digital organizer slipped out of my pocket. I almost cried as I looked on helplessly watching it bounce off the road over and over again from about 30 mph. I screamed for the reporter to stop. I went back on foot and looked for it. I expected multiple pieces on the road. NOPE! It had a few scratches on it and fired up just fine when I turned the power on. I had a couple more years of fine use till it was stolen along with my car and other toys I had at the time.
