Careful! It's fragile! Could be better

bywmcot Nov 16, 2008
Pros Good quality photos, easy to use.
Cons Plastic lens and cheap feel.  Easily damaged.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  An OK camera that could have been a lot better.  I would pay the extra bucks for a Fujifilm Z20fd
The Casio Exilim EX-Z77 digital camera is one of the latest in Casio's move-to-plastic construction cameras.  Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad camera.  The picture quality is right up there with the rest of the Casio line.

My complaint comes from the view of someone who works on these for a living.  Casio has joined the trend to go to plastic and save money in manufacturing.  Soon, all cameras will become throw-away cameras.  Casio has opted to keep the aluminum case (a good thing) but has gone to a more plastic, lightweight lens assembly (a BAD thing.)  Add to that the fact that most of these are worn with wrist straps or neck lanyards, and you have the probability that the camera will swing into a hard object sooner or later.  Once this happens, you can kiss your lens good-bye.  Actually, you can kiss the whole camera good-bye since the cost of replacing the lens will probably be more than you paid for the camera. (Most extended warraties will not cover impact damage to lenses, LCDs, etc.)

Another thing that bugs me about most new Casio cameras is the dumb "YouTube Mode" sticker on the front.  This is basically a clever way of saying, "yes, this camera has a low resolution video and photo mode so you can upload poor quality pictures and video clips to YouTube."  My point is - WHAT DIGITAL CAMERA DOES NOT HAVE A LOW RESOLUTION MODE???  Basically, this is Casio's way of "announcing" a new feature that digital cameras have always had!  You can buy $30.00 cameras that have YouTube quality!

Finally, Casio has opted to stick with one of those "special," high-priced, rechargeable batteries.  You will want to have a spare on hand and it will cost a pretty penny (unless you buy one of those "no-name" generic rip-offs that last a couple of months.)

This could have been a better camera.  For a few bucks more you can get a Fujifilm Z20fd which is much better built, has a protected lens, and will probably last you years longer.

With digital cameras, it used to be that you got what you paid for, but you have to be very careful now that you're not just paying for a name!
