A fun toy that comes in handy

byGumboh Jul 15, 2001
Pros Good value, decent picture quality
Cons A bit bulky, poor sound quality, should include power adapter and case
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If you're looking for an inexpensive handheld TV for general use it's one of the best.
I received the Casio 880 as a Christmas present and I have found it to be quite useful. Its screen is a bit small and the picture quality is not any better than a Sega Game Gear but for most purposes it does a fine job. At times, the reflection of the surrounding light can make the picture a bit annoying to view, but the brightness knob can usually decrease any glare. Like a Game Gear or Gameboy, the sound is rather poor. As you might expect, the small speaker yields a flat, ?tin can? like sound. It does not get very loud, and will distort at high volume.

The layout is very simple and is a breeze to use. The surface houses the tuning button, which selects the channel you wish to view. A bar appears on the screen to indicate the channel you are viewing. The left side has a slider switch to select ?Off,? ?VHF,? or ?UHF? channel. Additionally, the left panel has 1/8? inch audio/video output, a 6-volt direct current jack for the optional power adapter as well as the antenna. The antenna folds to the side when not in use, and extends approximately two feet. The right panel has volume and brightness controls. The top panel has 1/8? inch (mini jack) output for headphones/audio out. (Note: this is NOT a balanced ?audio out? so be sure to keep the volume low when connecting to external speakers) The headphone out is meant to be mono (only left channel), however if you leave the plug in half way the audio signal will be directed to both (left and right) channels.

I am unsure how long the batteries are expected to last but it is reasonably long. (I know that it will handle (at least) a two-hour movie and a half a dozen half-hour programs on separate viewing occasions on a set of fresh alkaline batteries.) It requires 4 AA batteries or a power adapter (not included). The biggest complaint I have about it is that it did not come with a carrying case/pouch or a car/power adapter. Other than that I am quite happy with it and find it very useful.
