Casio TV 970 - The Italian Opera Singer Is Pointing You The Opposite Way!

Pros It worked sometimes all the one time(s) that I used it!
Cons overall quality
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  There is nothing that makes me want to buy another Casio TV 970 other than the occasional jumps of quality, but it's just not worth it.
Nobody likes a rant, but there is very little positive about the Casio TV 970. So please hang on with me as I will try to even out the positive and negative.

Where I Bought It

In case you haven't noticed, I buy almost all of my electronics from Best Buy. So there I was, the day before Thanksgiving looking for a portable TV that may come in handy for long drives or being stuck in a snow storm (you'll learn about that further on...). So I went to the portable TV area of the store and found the Casio TV 970 and another one with similar looks but had a DVD player in it. The Casio TV 970 was $50 for that day only and I asked the employee to ring one up for me. Unfortunately, there were no more left in stock; only on display. I asked him if I would get a rain check for the same price, and he said that Best Buy had no such policy. He also told me that the price would go up to $90 after that day, and the next shipment would be in a few days.

A few days later, I came back and there it was for $90. However, with Best Buy's price match, I got it for $81 since the Circuit City across the street was selling it for $81. They also told me to buy an adaptor, but there weren't any left. Instead, I used my cell phone adaptor. You can plug the adaptor into the car instead of wasting the two AA batteries.

What Convinced Me To Buy The Casio TV 970

I was attracted to the looks and the price. The TV is small, silver, and has a transparent coating of plastic around the screen. Also, Casio was known to make high-quality products up to this product that they made!

Channels

The channels were limited as you must pay extra to have cable installed. Instead, I got standard channels when near big cities. When going through more isolated areas, I could hardly get one channel. But then again, one channel is better than none!

Screen, Sound, & Picture Quality

The screen is tiny, but what would you expect for a portable TV? It is 2.3" and is color, unlike many other portable TV's which have small screens and black and white screens. Below the screen are little numbers which indicate the channel you are watching.

Sound quality is something that can be better, yet much worse! Sometimes the sound was just excellent, other times it was just plain horrible. It really does matter what channel you are watching and where you are. The sound comes out of a little speaker on top of the TV.

Picture quality, again, depends on where you are. Sometimes, the screen would be crystal clear when driving near huge cities and pointing the antenna to the power line. Other times, the screen was fuzzy and you had to keep changing the position of the TV to get a clear picture, but it really depends on your location most of all.

Features

~ Four and a half hours of battery life
~ Headphone jack
~ Antenna

As you can see, there are not many features on a portable TV than on a regular TV.

My Experience

So there I was driving from Wingdale, NY to Astoria, NY on Christmas night. We were prepared for the two hour drive back with a CD player, snacks, drinks, and of course, the Casio TV 970. We left at about 9:00pm loaded with all of our presents and a big credit card bill, on our way back down to Astoria.

Many of you New Yorkers know about the horrible winter storm Christmas night (not eve). Right as we were entering Yonkers, a car in front of us crashed into a snow bank then onto the road. We were stuck there for over an hour, bumper to bumper, not moving at all. What a great Christmas gift!

Fortunately, we thought ahead and had entertainment with us. I took out the Casio TV 970 out and my wife watched TV while our daughter slept in the back seat. There were three Spanish channels, and about four English (American) channels. There, we watched a bit of a movie and soon figured out that it was a movie that was not worth watching since the sound quality and screen quality was fuzzy. Then, we switched over to a Spanish channel where they were having a special Italian opera singer. My wife who is a fan of anything Italian made me watch it as my eardrums rang louder than ever! This was the only case that I wish the sound quality was bad, but no, when you are right next to one of the largest cities in the world, the sound quality is excellent!

Just as traffic began to pick up, I put away the TV and then, you will never believe it...the antenna came off! I had handled it very gently, but it just snapped off. Bye-bye portable TV!

When we got back to Rochester a few days later, I went back to Best Buy and told them all about it. I only got to use the Casio TV 970 once, and it wasn't that great of an experience either. Best Buy gladly paid me back the $81 that I paid for the portable TV in the first place. They also paid me back another $12 for the two year guarantee that I got.

My Thoughts

The Casio TV 970 is not what I would call quality. I liked that sometimes I would get a clear picture and good sound quality, and yet a small selection of channels to watch. But then again, I only used it once before it broke. Also, it would only be wise to make a product that would work no matter where on the earth you are. Say if you are going on a long car trip and you don't pass many cities on the way down, then the Casio TV 970 is not for you. You will hardly get any channels to watch, will get limited quality on the picture, and may just suffer the harsh sounds of fuzzy television. When it comes down to your choice of the Casio TV 970 or another portable television, make the right choice.
