To the Moon Alice....

Pros easy to use, powerful, computerized
Cons pricey
Recommended it? Yes
We are currently looking for a replacement to our telescope (it suffered a melt down in a fire). I have a friend who has the Celestar 8 Deluxe Computerized model telescope. I noticed it out on his back deck after a diner party.

I asked if I could look at it. He responded by saying yes and that it was currently scheduled to track Mars. I looked through and sure enough, there was the "Red Planet".

The controls were a snap, almost any one could use them right away. I was really impressed with the clarity of the heavenly objects I saw.

The Celestar 8 Deluxe Computerized is the same scope with the addition of Celestron's Advanced Astro Master. This exceptional telescope has all of the very best features. I feel (even if it is a bit pricey) the it is the perfect choice for the astronomer who wants it all and demands the very best.

The drive system is smooth functioning and never jerky. This is due to the highly accurate worm gear drive system, stepper drive motor electronics coupled to the control programming of the Advanced Astro Master. The drive system has four tracking rates and PEC (periodic error correction).

The optics are an eight inch (203mm) aperture with a focal Length of 2032mm {or a f/10 focal ratio}. The clarity and power is pumped up with a 26mm Plossl Eyepieces (78x). For manual sightings the 9x50 "Finderscope" provides a powerful image.

The Celestar 8 series telescopes are powered by 9 volt alkaline batteries and runs for a rated fifty hours of uninterrupted viewing.

The standard accessories for this telescope include: a declination motor, car battery adapter, hand controller and a tripod that's exceptionally rigid and sturdy, with adjustable height.

The controller is the key to the easy use of this telescope. The Advanced Astro Master system contains a database of over 10,000 objects. Including the entire RNGC catalog, the Messier catalog, selected objects within the IC catalog, major planets, and over 241 interesting double and multiple stars. You can also program 25 different objects of your choice, so you can return easily to your favorite objects whenever you're observing.

The system makes observing simple by eliminating the need to polar align, or enter longitude or time. Scrolling descriptions of each object you choose to view are displayed and the pointing system guides you from object to object, then immediately aligns on the object you choose to observe. The 16 character LED readout provides object coordinates, magnitude, type, common name, constellation and additional description for each object viewed.

The Advanced Astro Master also contains a RS-232 serial interface to allow usage of popular PC computer programs.

All in all, a telescope worth it's weight in gold because of it's capabilities, ease of use and power.
