Decent scope but a few problems

Pros Huge Star Library, Price, and Motorized.
Cons Battery life, Difficult to use, Annoying Set-up
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  No, I feel this scope is missing key elements in a beginner scope.
The Celestron NexStar 114GT is a good telescope but needs some improvements. A good beginner scope but you must have some knowledge of the stars and heavens. First off the scope requires you to know where certain stars are for alignment. Now if your in a certain area or are a beginner to astronomy then you are dead out of luck. You wont be able to properly align the scope which ruins the purpose of the automatic library and finder. Now another problem that involves the alignment is the scope doesnt take into account the time and the earths movement which a couple of other scopes I have owned do. This requires multiple alignments while observing the heavens.

Now onto the main part of the telescope. One of the best features of the telescope is the remote with the built in library of the stars. Now the only problem with this is that it wont tell you if its out or not unless you go through a series of menues to determine it and if you dont know what your looking for then your out of luck and choosing this item will cause the telescope to move down and keep moving even when its hitting the base and this throws it totally out of alignment which is sad.

The battery pack is also a huge problem. The thing absolutely eats batteries up. They advertise around 8hrs of battery life but I never reached anything remotely close. I fixed the battery life problem by going and buying a large battery pack and running the telescope off the battery pack which provided for more than enough stargazing time.

Overall its a decent telescope but has room for major improvements that would greaten a beginners experience. After all this is a beginners scope.
